What Are You Holding Back?

Susan Hansted

In this episode of Wealth Consciousness,  Susan leads listeners through a relaxing breathing exercise, emphasizing the importance of being present in the moment. The episode explores the concept of holding back and hiding aspects of oneself, using a thought model to understand and overcome tolerations hindering personal growth.

Main Points:

  • Understanding Tolerations: Tolerations are identified as obstacles between one's current state and desired goals, hindering progress. We emphasize the need to identify and address these tolerations.
  • The Power of Thought Models: Thought models are discussed as tools for understanding and deconstructing limiting beliefs. By changing thought patterns, individuals can transform their experiences and achieve desired outcomes.
  • From Victim to Hero: We illustrate how shifting perspectives can turn victimhood into resilience and ultimately into heroic triumphs. Changing thought models can lead to empowered narratives and positive outcomes.
  • Taking Action: Listeners are encouraged to reflect on their current state, identify goals, and pinpoint tolerations holding them back. By recognizing and addressing these tolerations, individuals can move closer to their goals and embrace their full potential.
  • Embracing Authenticity: The episode concludes with a call to embrace authenticity and stop hiding parts of oneself. By aligning thoughts with desired outcomes and embodying one's true self, listeners can manifest their aspirations and lead fulfilling lives.

Hello and welcome to this episode of Wealth Consciousness. I'm always really happy for the opportunity to be with you, and as always, I invite you to get out of your scroll and just do this one thing right now. Join me in this conversation and join me in coming up with new ideas and insights for yourself in this time together. So as always, I hope that those of you who follow this podcast have now learned that they are conditioned to relax when they come to this podcast. In other words, you're not scrolling through your social media, you're not doing five other things. You are just coming to this podcast to find a little bit of relaxation, insight, and perhaps even some tools that you can take into your next breath. So we're going to start with a little breathing exercise today because again, I hope that you have become accustomed to the idea of relaxing when you come to this podcast.

So we're going to use box breathing today. And just a little background, the reason why we use relaxation techniques in this podcast is to help you to drop into this present moment. We live in a busy culture and we are people of doing instead of people of being. So I'd like for you to take this exercise, allow yourself to just focus on just this one thing. So for those of you who've already done box breathing, you'll know that this is super simple. If it's new to you, I'll walk you through it. What we're going to do is ideally you will close your eyes, and I'd like for you in your imagination to draw a box a square. And what we're going to do, ideally, again, with your eyes closed, picturing this square box in your mind, in your imagination. We're going to breathe in for the count of five on one side of the box. Then we're going to hold for a count of five as we go across the top of the box.

And then we're going to release in five. So in other words, the exhale in five counts as we follow our way down the other side of the box. And then we're going to allow ourselves to just hold that place of exhale, pause for another five counts as we travel across the bottom of the box. And then inhale again, super simple. Don't overthink it. So if you would, go ahead, close your eyes, imagine the box, and now we're going to breathe in through the nose for a count of five. And you're going to travel with your eyes up the side of the box. And then I'm going to count for you as you go around the box. And I want you to notice that you will just be listening for the numbers as we count, not figuring anything else out, not opening your eyes, not grabbing your phone, not doing anything else. So I'm going to go ahead and count for you as we get started. Closing your eyes, imagining a square box in your imagination. I'm going to count for you. So breathe in through the nose. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Now we're going to hold that inhale across the top of the box, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Now exhale out through the mouth, down the other side of the box, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5. And now pause. Just holding in that exhale, going across the bottom end of the box in a count of 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. And now you can inhale again.

So now that you see how simple it is, you could borrow this exercise at any time you'd like, and you could imagine yourself traveling around the edges of that box and allowing yourself to do just one thing. And that's breathe. So again, I want to reinforce that for us to be open to new insights for us to be available to new information, we do best when we are in a relaxed state, a neutral state. Now, if you're upright and you're breathing, you probably are not in a neutral state unless you are in a meditative state. So what I'd like to do is just remind you to use tools like the breath box throughout your day to take a moment to center yourself, bring your back, bring your attention back to your center, and from there we make better decisions. We give better attention to detail, to conversations, to new insights, and we are able to access our creativity. Today I have sort of an interesting topic that I want to share with you and hope that you'll think through and perhaps even give me your feedback on. But I want to talk today about the idea of what are you holding back and perhaps if it will help to stimulate the idea for you. What are you hiding?

What aspect of yourself do you hold back? Do you keep small? Do you keep in a container in the back cupboard with the door closed? I'd like to offer today that we're all holding something back and I'd like to offer today also a resolution for that. Now, we use both scientific and experiential models for change and a growth mindset. We use what we call a thought model. And once you learn a thought model, you can deconstruct that thought model with ease. And so what I mean by that is that we're all holding something back. If we have any growth goals at all, if we have any goals that we are moving towards, we're holding something back until we get there. And then my hope is that you'll want to make a new stretch goal after that. But here's what I mean by this. If we have today our current state, and then we have whatever our goal state looks like, what sits in either the gap or the canyon, depending on how you see it or tolerations. So we're tolerating whatever it is in our current state today that has not yet gotten us to our goal, but I'd like to offer that as soon as you understand the thought model of toleration, in other words, current state, some behavior, some environment, some impact, some partners, some situation that you tolerate that gets in the way of getting you to your goal.

And so when we can start to break down that thought model, then we can start to remove that gap, actually narrow it down, make it much, much, much smaller, and we can see where we've been holding back from literally being in our best and highest self. And so today what I want us to look at is this idea that we have to listen for the thought model. And so perhaps maybe you've known someone or been in a situation where you've heard someone talking and you've thought, that sounds like a victim. Wow, that sounds really heavy or harsh or a difficult way of looking at the world. But when we can look at that same thought model of what we would call a victim and with a little change, we would also call it resilient, right? Just a little change in that story. And we could go from victim too resilient, and then even if we created a little more change, perhaps turn up the volume in the direction of resilience, we could even have a hero, right? Same story described differently. And so this is the same concept as a thought model. Our thoughts create our experience, and when we change the thought model, we create a new experience.

And so what I'd like for you to think about today, what I'd like for you to experience today is the idea that you could look for yourself at where do you have tolerations in the way of you having the goals that you're setting for yourself for this year, for the day, for your business, for yourself, for your relationships, for your health. I'd like you to start to listen for in your own language during the day, in the way that you communicate with others. Start to listen for where you have your toleration and how we can start to take that current state that you're in today, start to narrow down or reduce the tolerations and get us more quickly, exponentially faster to our goal. But the question will really be, are you willing to stop holding back? Are you willing to stop hiding? And so that can be a tough question, but the answer today is in our thought, that our thoughts create our experience.

And that when we start to pay attention to the thought models or the language that we use and start to notice that it pretty much always gets us the same result. That now we have to change up the equation. And when we change up the equation, we get a new result. So in other words, we can change the toleration of what sounds like a victim into lesser toleration. That sounds like resilient. Or we could even push it to hero. What have you overcome in your current state, in your tolerations that has more quickly gotten you to your goal? Or could you get to your goal if you were to narrow down, reduce the things that you tolerate that aren't working for you? So I would invite you to take a moment, take some paper, write a little bit about where your current state is today, what your goals are for this week, this month, this year, and then write down what gets in the way.

What's in that gap between your current state and your desired state of your goal, and what can you do about those tolerations? And who would you have to be to no longer hold back any part of yourself? Who would you have to be if you were to no longer have a place you hide in? So with that, I would like for you to think about until the next time we meet, that as you pay attention to the thoughts that create your life, you will have it when you believe it. Until next time, thank you for listening to today's episode. I'm so grateful to have you here with me.
